ABOUT THE JOINING PROJECT
We don’t mess around! New Craft Artists in Action installed two 16 ft pieces for the Joining Project on the Massave Bridge that connects Boston and Cambridge, MA. Expanding the idea of our project “Net Works” we chose to weave finger knit strands of yarn into construction netting, a material that’s become so ubiquitous in our rapidly developing cities. We ask that this changing climate support old and new spaces for art and community engagement rather than stifling true innovation and growth.
Photo captions for the 2 different panels we created:
The NCAA celebrates the inclusion of craftivism as a DIY public art movement akin to graffiti. Weaving school-spirit/notebook-style bubble letters, often seen in pieces from the 80’s we ask audiences to think about new forms of craft and activism.
On our second panel, nick-named “Boston Loves Impressionism” aka “Crochet Monet”. we decided to weave a representational sunset sea-scape recalling Boston’s appreciation for traditional painting movements such as impressionism. Many of the NCAA players, such as Andrea Evans, Maria Molteni and Samantha Fields are trained in traditional disciplines like painting and drawing. While notable collections in institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts inform aspects of our independent art practices, we’d like to push Boston beyond it’s conservative comfort zone, asking the city, its galleries and museums to support contemporary artists and collaborative efforts happening in our cities.
